Katie Holmes’ Anti-Climactic SYTYCD Performance

After weeks of buildup, Katie Holmes’ song and dance number finally aired on tonight. So was it worth all the hype? And did it make me “Get Happy”? Uh, no.

Earlier this month, choreographer Tyce Diorio - a man who has worked with far more talented dancers - dared to call the pre-taped performance “Oscar-winning.”

“The thing that is so awesome is that you won’t know, you don’t know what to expect … but then when you sit and watch it, it’s amazing. Amazing! And it’s not something in my opinion that’s just going to be like ‘oh, how nice.’ It’s not going to be that … ‘oh, look how sweet that is.’ No, it’s real. It’s as real as what you’re seeing now. I’m very proud of it, so I talk really highly of Katie,” Tyce told People magazine.

Katie Holmes to Appear on So You Think You Can Dance?

DescriptionUPDATE: It’s being reported that Katie Holmes will be doing a Judy Garland tribute.

She went from acting on the stage to doing a cabaret-esque number on Eli Stone. Now Katie Holmes is prepping to kick things up a notch.

According to multiple sources, the actress has been in secret rehearsals for an appearance on . Why Holmes? That part is not entirely clear. (Her Broadway stint didn’t exactly involve song or dance.) But it’s rumored that Katie may be one of several special guests turning up on the program’s 100th episode.

Although Nigel Lythgoe has confirmed meeting with the Mad Money star, he has not elaborated on what the one-on-one was about. Those in the know claim Katie has been privately “working with the choreographer Tyce Diorio” for a long time now. “She looks incredible. She is just doing an amazing job. Everyone is absolutely floored by how talented she is,” a source stated.

If all goes as (reportedly) planned, be sure to tune on July 8th.

Nigel Lythgoe Responds to Paula Abdul’s Comments

Nigel LythgoeNigel Lythgoe couldn’t have picked a better time to leave American Idol.

Over the past week, Paula Abdul has taken several opportunities to criticize her bosses over the Paula Goodspeed incident. In interviews with Barbara Walters and Good Morning America, the reality show judge said those involved with the Season 5 auditions were fully aware of her frightened state. She also claimed that the fan was intentionally let in because the producers find it amusing to cause her stress.

After listening to the stinging accusations, Lythgoe felt it was time to finally speak up. The former Idol producer, who is currently working on NBC’s show, , addressed the controversy at a press event yesterday. “You do not take somebody in that room that you believe is a danger to herself or a danger to Paula. That would not enter our heads.”

Simon Cowell Talks About Boring Season 7

Simon CowellEarlier this week, made it known that changes - good or bad - will be a-coming.

The American Idol judge told reporters that given Nigel Lythgoe’s departure, he felt it was important to have more input for Season 8. As it was, Cowell felt a bit “bored” with last year’s contest - so this may be his only way of saving the show from sinking any further.

In an interview with reporters, Simon said that despite stories about overbearing stage dads and gay-stripping pasts, he thought Season 7 lacked the proper amount of controversy. By the time of the finale, he was left with no surprises.

“I felt I had known the contestants for years. And the other problem was that they were so media savvy, these contestants, that they never really showed us their true personalities - they were like robots. I didn’t know much more about them at the end than I did in the beginning. I think that it [‘Idol’] could be more interesting and controversial than it was last year - you’re definitely going to see a change and I think it will be an improvement.”

But how exactly will he explain the pathetically low turnout in Puerto Rico? Can he make that look exciting? I guess we’ll just have to until next year to see what’s in store.

Is American Idol Nearing Its End?

Nigel LythgoeAlthough much was made of ‘s ratings dip last season, it’s hard to criticize a show that produces numbers any program would kill for. On it’s worst day, Idol could still easily beat anything currently offered. But does that mean the series is still water cooler television?

Well, based on the recent turnout in Puerto Rico - maybe it isn’t. On August 2nd, the producers took the auditions over to the U.S. territory for the first time in eight seasons. Where best to find the next Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez or Ricky Martin? And while it’s still possible the next winner was discovered on that island, the judges only had a total of 300 to choose from. Yes, only 300 showed up to the San Juan auditions. (I doubt the crowd even filled one section of Coliseo de Puerto Rico.) If can somehow skirt around the pathetic sight during Season 8, he’ll have totally earned his paycheck for the year.

‘American Idol’ Says No to Britney Spears

American IdolThe upcoming season of American Idol promises a few changes and some never-before-seen additions to the show, but pop princess Britney Spears will not be one of them.

The show’s executive producer announced earlier this week that he does not believe Spears is in good enough condition to be a mentor to the aspiring hopefuls on Idol. “I think she needs to get herself together,” said executive producer Lythgoe. He did say, however, that he would have welcomed Spears on the FOX show last season, when it seemed she might be getting herself (and her career, and her personal life) back together again.

If the hopefuls could command media attention the way Spears does, they wouldn’t need reality TV.
